P.T.O. To Accept Miniskirts

2010 March 18
by Belvidere Green

Belvidere is no Harper Valley

Having seen the movie Harper Valley P.T.A. during my youth, I am well aware of how these organizations operate. Which is why upon finding out that the Belvidere PTO was sponsoring a Spring Clothing Drive it was immediately apparent to me, there had to be a catch.

So you can imagine my surprise when the Vice President of the Belvidere PTO, without even a touch of alcohol on her breath, said that “all types of clothes are to be accepted”. Well, as a local blogger bent on uncovering mischievous behavior this was just the kind of scandalous news I have been waiting for. Hence my headline.

If our local Parent Teacher Organization thinks it can get away without perpetuating small town stereotypes they have another thing coming. It is their obligation, I dare say, duty to assure that our children get to grow up in an environment where they can look back and complain about how the system failed them. Why its a tradition that stems back as far as anyone can remember. It’s just plain unfair to have kids miss out on something we parents hold so dear.

To think that they have been wasting valuable resources and time concentrating on silly things like reading, writing and science. It just sends shivers up my spine. Just who do they think they are?

The Day that Belvidere Green Socked it to the Belvidere PTO

leisure-suits.jpg We have the power to do something about this injustice. I call on all Belvidereians to rise up and give them all that you got. Have an old miniskirt laying around? Bag and give it to them. Got any clothing you are looking to get rid of in order to make room for some brand new summer ware? Bag and give it to them. How about some handbags, belts, scarves, ties or hats? Bag and give it to them. We’ll see if they mean it when they claim they will take all our clothing no matter how distasteful they may find it. Hawaiian flowered beach shirt, bell bottoms, terrycloth shorts, tie dye, white Saturday Night Fever disco suit? Bag and give it to them. Let’s show them what were really made of.

All the Dirty Details

Together with their accomplice A&E Clothing Corportation, the Belvidere PTO will be collecting the following items on Saturday, April 10, 17, and 24th from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm at 504 3rd Street in Belvidere (a.k.a. The Beaney’s):

  • Clothing
  • Shoes & Accessories
  • so called, Soft household items such as, bedding, curtains, tablecloths, towels, etc.,
  • Hard children’s toys and stuffed animals.

A&E will weigh the collection, sort it and ship it in containers to Africa, Central America, India, and Poland. So please mix in all your good stuff so that our protest does little to affect those in need. The PTO for there part will receive 13¢ per pound and continue their campaign of helping to meet the educational needs of our children. (Oh, will these PTOers ever learn)
